Controlling Britain’s borders


This report from the UK think tank Civitas looks at the challenge of enforcing the UK’s immigration rules.

The UK receives tens of thousands of applications for asylum every year, but less than half are usually granted. Only a minority of those refused asylum are deported from the country and as a result there is a mounting backlog of illegal immigrants waiting to be removed.

In this pamphlet, David Wood, a former Director General of Immigration Enforcement at the Home Office, describes the challenges facing immigration officials and why the asylum system has become so overwhelmed by its task.
