The early years workforce: a fragmented picture

The Education Policy Institute has published a comprehensive analysis of the early years workforce in England. The analysis studies the latest publicly available data to build a detailed picture of the present day workforce. It examines staff composition, qualifications, pay and other trends at a provider, national and regional level, and assesses the implications of these findings for the future of early years provision. The analysis finds that there is a downward trend in the proportion of qualified staff – highlighting how, if such trends continue, the future of the early years workforce may be less qualified than it is presently. It finds that unless interventions are made, in the near term, such lack of highly trained staff may hinder the government’s recent expansion of childcare entitlements. In the long-term, children’s development at an early age may be negatively affected.
