Cognitive decline and financial outcomes in retirement

Think tank: Institute for Fiscal Studies

This event hosted by UK think tank the Institute for Fiscal Studies discusses cognitive decline and its impact on financial choices and outcomes.

As the UK population ages, and many older people continue to hold their wealth in defined contribution pension pots and other liquid assets, increasing numbers are making active financial decisions into advanced ages. The risk of cognitive decline rises with age, accelerating particularly among those in their late 70s and beyond. Understanding the economic and financial effects of cognitive decline is therefore increasingly important for the public, policymakers, and the pensions industry alike. There may be a role for interventions to help reduce the risk of adverse financial outcomes for those experiencing cognitive decline.

At this online event, IFS researchers will present findings from a new report, funded by the IFS Retirement Savings Consortium, looking at cognitive decline and financial outcomes in later life. They will present new evidence on patterns of cognitive decline among older adults, how reaching low cognition is associated with financial outcomes later on, and how these patterns vary between groups. Following the presentation from IFS researchers, there will be a response from Sir Steve Webb (LCP), followed by a Q&A.
