At this event hosted by UK think tank NIESR the 2025 Deane Stone Lecture will be delivered by Professor Raquel Ortega-Argiles.
The twin industrial transition, which encompasses both digital or technological and green or sustainable transitions, is gaining significance in the fields of economics, industrial organisation, and economic geography. This shift is not without challenges, as it may lead to increasing spatial inequalities across the UK. An analysis of this phenomenon highlights its geographic distribution and raises important implications for the overall economic landscape, requiring a closer examination of these disparities.
Sharing her analysis that highlights some potential concerns regarding the spatial inequalities that may arise from these transitions, Raquel will delve into a multi-methodological framework that has been developed to identify areas of local vulnerability and opportunity across UK local authorities.
Attendees will learn about the varying realities of how different places are benefiting or being challenged by these changes, emphasising the need for place-specific strategies. The speaker will also highlight the urgent need for innovative data sources and methodologies to analyse local vulnerability and preparedness, concluding with policy recommendations for technological diversification and strategic autonomy at a sub-national level.
