Heart of the matter: capacity, devolution and mission-led government

This event hosted by UK think tank Localis discusses their research into the future direction of place based public service reform.

‘Heart of the matter – getting to grips with whole place transformation’ is a research project which has sought, through extensive dialogue with public service directors and placemakers, and independent place research, to ascertain the appetite for holistic service and placemaking.

The intention of this major thought leadership study is to detail emerging good practice in whole place service transformation and to devise a modern philosophy and ethos for local delivery that will endure through the coming decade of necessary change and hope-filled reform.

The webinar discussion will discuss the findings of our research into the future direction of place based public service reform.

Our particular focus for this webinar will be on where the rubber hits the road for the new model of statutory local growth plans – where’s the capacity to deliver on them and how will it be connected across national, regional and local government?

An emphasis on ‘mission led’ government portends a return to directing the white heat of government focus and ‘deliverology’ on single issues and ‘wicked’ societal problems such as poverty, inequality and sustainability, homelessness, rough-sleeping – in addition to the statutory requirement for local growth plans.

In this last policy webinar before the Local Government Association Conference 2024, we want to ask:

• What does local government require to boost its own capacity to prepared and scale up to radical place-based transformation moonshots in the future?
• How will the new government’s plans for devolution and local growth support the desired direction of travel for continued local public service improvement and placemaking strength?
