4 December 2025, 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm

Location: NIESR, 2 Dean Trench Street, Smith Square, London SW1P 3HE

Think tank: National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR)

This event hosted by UK think tank NIESR discusses public debt and inflation in the UK and Germany.

For the 2025 Anglo-German Lecture, Professor Michael Krause from the University of Cologne will speak on public debt and inflation in the UK and Germany.

Both the UK and Germany face unprecedented economic and fiscal challenges, among them slow growth, aging population, rising budget deficits, in an environment of international economic and political instability.  Former strengths appear to have become weaknesses and both countries look for paths out of the stagnation. With high public debt, central banks face implicit and explicit pressures to accommodate fiscal policy. This talk discusses differences and similarities in the fiscal and monetary policy challenges both countries face, in particular regarding price stability.
