Tackling the youth employment challenge: Assessing the Milburn review, data gaps, and regional disparities

This event hosted by UK think tank NIESR will use the review’s key findings to explore wider questions for UK labour market policy.

The publication of the Milburn Review into Young People and Work brought to the fore some of the challenges facing those aged 16-24 searching for work. Significant regional inequalities and structural failures mean that the UK labour market is not a level playing field – outcomes are determined to a significant extent by a complex interplay of educational attainment, geography, and family disadvantage.

This webinar will use the review’s key findings to explore wider questions for UK labour market policy. The panel will examine gaps in the evidence base and discuss issues including how the experience of young people who are not in education, employment or training (NEET) varies across social groups and regions; the role and implications of mental health as a driver of labour market outcomes; and what can be learned from existing policies to reduce youth unemployment.

The event is aimed at policymakers, economists, academics and practitioners working in education, labour markets and social policy. Attendees will also have the opportunity to put questions to the panel during a dedicated Q&A session.
