Event

Wealth, power and liberal democracy

14 May 2025, 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Location: Online

Think tank: Joseph Rowntree Foundation

This event hosted by UK think tank the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and Prospect magazine considers the role of wealth in shaping the future of our societies and democracies.

In what promises to be an extremely thought-provoking discussion, leading thinkers, policymakers and influences will reflect on the relationship between wealth accumulation, societal responsibility, and democratic governance.

In the face of rising wealth inequality, increasing political influence by the ultra-wealthy, and the impending transfer of vast fortunes across generations, it’s vital that we consider the role of wealth in shaping the future of our societies and democracies.

This event will explore key questions:

  • Should an extreme wealth line exist, and what are its societal implications?
  • What responsibilities do the wealthy bear in addressing inequality and supporting democracy?
  • How should governments act to ensure wealth does not erode political freedoms?
