This event hosted by UK think tank Chatham House features Abdulrazak Al-Hijri, Acting Secretary General, Yemeni Islah Party in conversation.
Since the outbreak of Yemen’s civil war in 2014, Yemen’s Islamist Islah Party has remained a pivotal actor within the country’s complex political landscape. As one of the largest political parties in Yemen, and the second biggest parliamentary bloc, Islah has played a significant role in Yemen’s political life since the legalisation of political parties in 1990.During the current conflict, the party has maintained is position as one of the most prominent actors and remains represented in the internationally recognised government of Yemen.
This conversation with Acting Secretary General, Abdulrazak al-Hijri, takes place shortly after the 35th anniversary of the party’s formation and will examine the Islah party’s current position within Yemen’s shifting political spectrum, its relationships with regional and international actors, and its role in shaping post-war governance. The discussion will also explore the party’s vision for a sustainable political settlement in Yemen, and its perspective on the future structure of the Yemeni state.
Key questions to be discussed during the session include:
- How has the Islah Party’s role within Yemen’s political landscape evolved since the onset of the civil war?
- What are Islah’s current priorities and strategic objectives within the internationally recognized government and wider political spectrum?
- How does Islah view its relationships with regional and international actors, and how do these shape its political approach?
- What is the party’s vision for a sustainable political settlement and the future structure of the Yemeni state?
