High powered reforms to EU energy policy

Interventionist energy policy has disrupted the European Commission’s efforts to achieve greater liberalisation in energy markets by privatisation and deregulation.  The increase in non-contestable charges and emission targets have led to price distortions and the suboptimal allocation of scarce resources.

This briefing calls for the abolition of emissions reduction schemes and targets and the broadening of the current Emission Trading System to achieve both an economically efficient energy supply and a clean environment.
