The Adam Smith Institute is looking for a Head of Communications to join their team. Based in Westminster, London, the Adam Smith Institute is one of the UK’s leading think tanks. Independent, non-profit and non-partisan, they work to promote free market, neoliberal ideas through research, publishing, media outreach, and education. The Institute is today at the forefront of making the case for free markets and a free society in the United Kingdom.

The Head of Communications would be a core member of the dynamic ASI team. They would have oversight of the Institute’s entire media engagement strategy with the aim of promoting the ASI’s work and increasing their national profile. They would report to both the Director of Strategy and the Director of Operations. 

The ASI is looking for someone with experience in either political communications, print or media journalism, politics, or professional PR. They will need a proven track record in obtaining media coverage, shaping the debate, and have connections within Westminster and journalism. Experience writing for print or digital outlets and/or media appearances preferred. The candidate must have an understanding of and support for the work and ethos of the ASI.

Overview of responsibilities:

  • Directing the Institute’s overall media engagement and communications strategy.
  • Drafting and promoting press releases and arranging media coverage of the Institute’s publications, events and policy agenda.
  • Placing/pitching opinion pieces to national newspapers and online publications.
  • Managing inbound press and media inquiries. 
  • Representing the Institute in print and broadcast media. 
  • Building relationships with the journalists, producers, and prominent commentators. 
  • Monitoring the Institute’s press and media hits and ensuring they are represented on our social media accounts.
  • Managing the Institute’s social media channels (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc) and email communications.
  • Managing the Institute’s website, including updating the homepage, news and media pages with the latest content.
  • Maintaining the media contacts spreadsheet.
