The importance of an anti-lobbying clause


Given a letter from the EPP, S&D, and ALDE party presidents to the European Parliament, the European Union will begin debating the restrictions on EU grants to political organisations in order to remain faithful to the European value of neutral public spending.

The European Commission has lately been funding a number of political organisations which have used the grants for lobbying and activism—a wild misuse of taxpayers’ money. On the other hand, the United Kingdom has modelled neutrality in funding political organisations by requiring clauses prohibiting the use of public funds for such campaigning.

This briefing calls on the EU to implement the same clause in these grants. Such implementation will promote the EU’s engagement with civil society apart from the interests of political organisations and lobbyists.
