The results from Smart Thinking’s first survey of think tank employees.
Smart Thinking surveyed the employees at their partner think tanks in September 2020. We asked about salary, age, contracts and career development to get a sense of who worked in the UK think tank sector and how they found it. Those surveyed worked in research, communications, events and operations and ranged from people just starting out to senior management.
Key findings indicate a young sector with nearly half having graduated within 5 years. Pay is on the modest side with only 3% of researchers earning over £45,000 and a number of employees earning less than £25,000. The vast majority are on permanent contracts although you are more likely to have one if you work in research than if you work in other areas and 72% would recommend their workplace to a friend.
