United States Prosperity Index

This report from the UK think tank the Legatum Institute defines and measures the prosperity of America’s 50 states and Washington, D.C. over the past decade.

The United States has a world-leading economy. However, it under-performs in health, living conditions and safety, and as a result is ranked 17th (out of 149 countries) in the Legatum Prosperity Index. Furthermore, it has not advanced in the rankings over the last 10 years. In order to understand why the economic success of the U.S. has not yet translated fully into social wellbeing, the Legatum Institute created this new Index, defining and measuring the prosperity of each of the 50 states of the Union as well as Washington, D.C. over the past decade. For the very first time, the Index provides a thoroughly comprehensive picture of prosperity, across its economic, institutional and social dimensions, for all the different states and regions of the U.S.
