Founded in 1986 when we were known as the Centre for Local Economic Strategies, the Centre for Local Economies is an independent economics think tank and charity. We work collaboratively across the UK and Ireland to develop solutions that ensure economies are rooted in the places people call home.
We partner as equals with all levels of government, local institutions and communities — challenging outdated methods and tackling local issues with practical, long-term solutions.
Combining on-the-ground expertise, evidence-based research and advisory services, we support community wealth building — where we are recognised as the UK’s leading voice — improve public services, strengthen social infrastructure, accelerate innovation and facilitate a just climate transition.
We bring our understanding of local economies to decision-makers, showing how economic policy — and the flow and ownership of wealth — can better serve places and the people who live in them. We also host events and develop relationships that facilitate knowledge exchange between local practitioners.
To put it briefly, we help places do economies differently.
