This report from UK think tank the Coalition for Global Prosperity outlines how the UK can deepen and renew the special relationship over the next 20 years.
The UK is facing the most volatile and unpredictable global environment since the Second World War, a situation the Ministry of Defence has called a “pre-war era.” In this era, the UK’s alliances are its best defence, and none are more important than that with the United States. However, without sharing more of the burden in tackling our shared threats and challenges, the UK risks falling down the priority list for the White House, leaving us dangerously exposed.
This report outlines how the UK can deepen and renew the special relationship over the next 20 years. It outlines four shared threats and challenges: China’s technological and military capabilities; A resurgent Russia that will seek to harm the West well beyond the war in Ukraine; a global anti-Western movement promoted by Moscow and Beijing; and joint economic insecurity driven by the Chinese Communist Party’s dominance of critical mineral processing.
It also provides recommendations across defence, international development, diplomacy for how the UK can become more strategically important to the United States and ensure American commitment to the bilateral relationship, and our broader transatlantic alliance.
