Job details

The CER is an award-winning think-tank that seeks to achieve an open, outward-looking, influential and prosperous EU. It has two core missions: coming up with ideas and policies for making the EU more effective and successful; and improving the quality of the EU-UK relationship. It covers European economics, politics and security from its offices in London, Brussels and Berlin. The director will be based in London, but should travel frequently to Brussels and also to other European capitals from time to time.

Applicants should have expertise on the EU and Europe more generally, and a good network of contacts in Brussels and the major EU capitals. They should also be familiar with the debates on UK-EU relations. The next director should give intellectual leadership to the CER’s researchers, and should have experience of managing a multinational team spread across several locations, speaking to the media, writing policy-focused papers and fund-raising.

Further details of what the job entails can be found on the CER website.

The CER operates an open and transparent recruitment process. It is strongly committed to non-discrimination on grounds of gender, race, sexuality or age.

About the organisation

The Centre for European Reform is a think-tank devoted to making the European Union work better and strengthening its role in the world. The CER is pro-European but not uncritical. We regard European integration as largely beneficial but recognise that in many respects the Union does not work well. We also think that the EU should take on more responsibilities globally, on issues ranging from climate change to security. The CER aims to promote an open, outward-looking and effective European Union. Through our meetings, seminars and conferences, we bring together people from the worlds of politics and business, as well as other opinion-formers. Most of our events are by invitation only and off the record, to ensure a high level of debate. The conclusions of our research and seminars are reflected in our publications, as well as in the private papers and briefings that senior officials, ministers and commissioners ask us to provide. The CER is an independent, private not-for-profit organisation with offices in London, Brussels and Berlin. We are not affiliated with any government, political party or European institution. Our work is funded by donations from the private sector. Our annual reports give a good idea of what we do.

How to Apply

Those interested should send a CV, cover letter and links to relevant publications and public appearances or interviews (or articles in pdf format) to Sophie Valiant (sophie@cer.eu) by 12.00 (London time) on Friday 22 May 2026. We plan to interview short-listed candidates in late June, when the CER’s staff will also have an opportunity to meet informally those invited for interview. The successful candidate would ideally take up their role in January 2027.
