Think tank: Institute of Development Studies
This event hosted by UK think tank the Institute of Development Studies discusses what we can do to revitalise democracy around the world.
Join the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) and the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) to discuss what we can do to revitalise democracy around the world. Democracy has delivered many benefits – including education, peace and prosperity. But with growing economic inequality, many feel that current democratic systems are not delivered for them.
This has eroded trust in politics and institutions and been exploited by anti-democratic leaders. And yet, people’s appetite for democracy is still strong – with recent popular movements seeing broad calls for more transparent, inclusive and accountable governance from Kenya to Nepal and beyond.
This event will respond to this current democratic crisis and identify ways in which democracy can be renewed, both at home and abroad, particularly by strengthening citizen engagement and participation.
The event will be informed by a new report from IDS, Where’s the demos in Democracy? Building Democratic Futures and Resisting Autocracy.
