Spring 2026 Economic Forum
1 May 2026, 11:00 am – 12:00 pm
Location: Online
Think tank: National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR)
This event hosted by UK think tank the NIESR presents their updated macroeconomic outlook for the UK and the wider global economy.
The global economic landscape continues to be shaped by geopolitical volatility and disruptions to global commodity markets. In this Quarterly Economic Forum, NIESR researchers will focus on the recent energy price shock and its macroeconomic implications for inflation, output, and public finances.
During the session, we will present our updated macroeconomic outlook for the UK and the wider global economy. The presentation will be anchored by our central baseline forecast, as well as a modelled ‘adverse’ scenario. This alternative analysis explores the macroeconomic fallout should the ongoing war drag on for longer than currently anticipated, causing global oil and gas prices to remain elevated further and for a more prolonged period.
The presentation will conclude with a discussion on the policy implications of both scenarios, evaluating the trade-offs facing central banks and the Treasury as they navigate persistent inflationary pressures and sluggish growth.
