How mayors can deliver better transport infrastructure

Think tank: Centre for Cities
This event hosted by UK think tank Centre for Cities explores whether mayors have the powers to deliver the transport infrastructure their regions need.
The Government’s ambition to deliver “growth in every postcode” depends on strengthening successful urban economies while ensuring more people can access the opportunities they create. Transport infrastructure is central to both: better connectivity can boost city-region economies and connect more people to jobs and opportunity.
This event will explore whether mayors have the powers, capacity and financial autonomy to deliver the transport infrastructure their regions need. It will consider how stronger mayoral institutions, streamlined planning, greater control over transport decisions and deeper fiscal devolution could help places develop and sustain long-term investment pipelines.
The event will begin with a 20-minute presentation from Centre for Cities researcher Adam Moogan, setting out new analysis on these questions, followed by a 25-minute discussion and audience Q&A with Andrew Carter, Chief Executive of Centre for Cities, and Rob Johnson, Senior Analyst.
