Beyond the headlines: What Budget 2026 means for the UK economy
30 October 2026, 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm
Location: Online
Think tank: National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR)
This event hosted by UK think tank NIESR examines what the Chancellor’s decisions mean for the UK economy.
On 28 October, Chancellor John Healey will deliver the first Budget of the Burnham premiership. Balancing the challenges of persistent inflation, geopolitical uncertainty and elevated levels of public debt with the Government’s ambition to deliver “growth in every postcode” and ease cost-of-living pressures will not be an easy task. The measures announced will have important implications for households, businesses and the financial markets, whilst also shaping the UK’s fiscal and economic outlook.
Taking place a few days after the Budget, this expert discussion will examine what the Chancellor’s decisions mean for the UK economy. We will look beyond the initial reaction and headline announcements to assess the economic rationale behind the measures, their likely impact on growth, inflation and the public finances, and the challenges that remain for policymakers.
