Densifying around train stations: how can rail support urban growth?

This event hosted by UK think tank Centre for Cities launches new research exploring the relationship between railway infrastructure, housing density and urban growth.

The Government has identified densifying around train stations as a key way to help close Britain’s urban density gap and deliver more homes in cities. It is a welcome direction of travel: recent Centre for Cities research found that British cities are missing more than two million homes compared with their French and Japanese counterparts.

This event will launch new Centre for Cities research exploring the relationship between housing density and railway infrastructure. Does housing density respond to better connectivity? Is limited transport infrastructure constraining urban densification? And how much could building more homes around train stations help close Britain’s urban density gap?

The session will begin with a presentation of the research, followed by a discussion on the implications for policymakers and the role of transport investment in supporting urban growth. There will be an opportunity for audience questions at the end.
