This report from UK think tank the Fabian Society explores how civil servants can help deliver a smarter state with AI.
As artificial intelligence plays an increasingly prominent role in our lives, the government is rightly using its potential to rewire the state. The long-term efficacy and sustainability of our public services will rely on finding smarter, more efficient ways to deliver for the public.
Against this backdrop, reforms introduced under the current government have set the UK on a solid trajectory towards reclaiming its position as a world leader in digital government. This progress, however, can only be sustained if the government takes a strategic approach to reform. Successful digital transformation entails targeted investment in both financial and human capital. A ‘project chainsaw’ approach that focuses on cutting headcount would be a false economy.
Drawing on survey data and insights from three focus groups, this report examines the challenges civil servants face in shaping the government’s AI agenda. It sets out five priorities to help address these challenges and unlock the full potential of the workforce.
