This report from UK think tank British Future and the Centre for English Identity & Politics looks at why it’s time for an inclusive England outside the stadium.
New research from British Future and the Centre for English Identity and Politics examines English identity, race and football today.
The research examines:
- Do symbols of English identity, like the England team, England flag and St George’s Day, belong equally to people of different ethnic backgrounds?
- Is English identity open to people of all ethnic backgrounds in England, or only to those who are white?
- Do perceptions of the England flag, flying outside a pub or house, change when the England team is playing?
Sunder Katwala of British Future looks at how football changed who we thought of as English and how we move beyond being a ‘90-minute nation’; while John Denham of the Centre for English Identity and Politics writes about how we could build an inclusive English identity outside the stadium.
