This report from UK think tank Centre for Cities identifies four key reasons why high street vacancy rates vary so much from city to city and how to improve their fortunes.

Centre for Cities looks at the variation in performance across high streets in the centres of the UK’s largest cties and towns to understand the factors that affect the number of empty shops.

Using millions of credit and debit card transactions, it goes much deeper into the performance of high streets than has been done before, measuring things like catchment areas of each city centre, spending patterns within them (and how this varies between people from more and less affluent neighbourhoods), and how much spending leaks outside of each city.
