This report from UK think tank Chatham House emphasises the importance of applying humanitarian principles within wider efforts to promote peace.

Gender equality and inclusivity are important considerations in humanitarian efforts to alleviate suffering and preserve dignity in conflicts. However, where there is systemic gender-based marginalization, humanitarian organizations continue to face severe challenges.

This paper demonstrates the importance of assessing the application of humanitarian principles – humanity, neutrality, impartiality and independence – in different contexts to understand their impact on the promotion of gender equality and inclusion.

While humanitarian principles are compatible with assistance projects that consider gender in their design and analysis, tensions can emerge between the principles.
