The UK government has emphasised the importance of ‘levelling the playing field’ for responsible companies to mitigate environmental, social and governance (ESG) risks affecting the mining and processing of minerals needed for the energy transition. Yet there is little research into the levers available to the UK to realise this ambition.
This paper examines the UK’s role as a financial and trading hub for the mining industry, and a centre of sustainability and international development expertise, assessing how far these have been, and could be, leveraged to improve standards.
