This report from UK think tank the King’s Fund explores scaling ambient voice technology in the NHS.

The King’s Fund argues that ambient voice technology (AVT) presents a significant opportunity to reduce administrative burden, improve staff experience and enhance patient care across the NHS, but only if implementation is supported by service redesign, workforce training and strong governance.

While early pilots have generated enthusiasm and shown potential benefits in areas such as documentation, productivity and patient communication, the report warns against repeating the mistakes of previous digital transformation programmes. It calls for outcome-based contracting, closer partnerships between the NHS and suppliers, better interoperability between digital systems, robust safety monitoring and meaningful patient involvement.

The report concludes that AVT should be viewed not simply as a productivity tool but as a foundation for wider AI-enabled innovation, with the potential to support more effective care, better use of data and the development of UK AI capability.
