Salary sacrifice pensions: who will the reforms affect?

13 May 2026, 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm

Location: Online

Think tank: Institute for Fiscal Studies

This event hosted by UK think tank the Institute for Fiscal Studies presents findings from a new report on salary sacrifice pensions.

In one of the largest revenue-raising measures of last November’s Budget, the Chancellor announced that salary sacrifice pension contributions above £2,000 per year will be liable for both employer and employee National Insurance Contributions from 2029-30. Around 7.5 million employees currently contribute to their pension via salary sacrifice arrangements.

At this online event, IFS researchers will present findings from a new report on how the reform will likely affect different groups of employees and employers. They will also discuss how the reform fits in with the broader treatment of pension contributions by the tax system and examine its implications. The IFS presentations will be followed by responses from Andy Harrop (Director, Public First) and Alice Jeffries (Head of Tax Policy, CBI), and plenty of time for Q&A.

This event will be free to view on Slido and the IFS website.
